The vocals I chopped and pitched to create a sort of vocal melody that artists like Flume and Hermitude use. I Kept the baseline relatively simple, so not to mess with the relaxed vibe I was going for. It has a nice and punchy analog sound that went well with the rest of the track. The Bass heard in the track was created with Monark, an instrument in Reaktor that emulates the Minimoog synthesiser. I used an MPC groove to give it that swing feeling and matched the groove with the rest of the midi information. The drums switch between playing at regular and half time with a relatively simple hip hop beat. I also used the Jupiter-8 for an arpeggiated synth lead that played during the verse and pre-chorus. The rest of my melodies I based around this progression and the F# Minor Scale. I used a Keys preset of the Jupter-8 V2 VST synth to create a smooth chord progression in the key of F# minor that fit nicely with the guitar and vocal parts I was using. So I tried to recreate that chilled out relaxed atmosphere within the remix. Waves are generally seen as calm and relaxing, maybe due to the constant in and out similar to our breath. Therefor I used the warping technique in Ableton to match the stems to the beat while keeping the original pitch. I decided to keep the remix in the same key of the original, that being F# Minor.
I really liked the vocal and guitar elements of the track and decided to work with these stems for the remix.
The original track Waves can be heard here: The stems I received were from the self titled track from there EP called Waves. I recently received stems to remix off the guitarist and backup vocalist Tim Hasemann of Brisbane Experimental Psychedelic rock band MESSMESS.
